The Boston Red Sox have had trouble in the back end of their starting rotation, especially with Walker Buehler, who simply can’t have a good game consistently. However, it seems that has come to an end, at least for now.
According to MLB.com’s Jeffrey Lutz, Buehler has been demoted from the starting rotation, and will now become a bullpen arm.
“Red Sox right-hander Walker Buehler is headed to the bullpen. Boston manager Alex Cora made the announcement Friday. He did not name a starter for Monday’s game at Baltimore, which would have been Buehler’s next scheduled start,” Lutz revealed.

Buehler has struggled in his time with the Sox, only having one true great start in this entire season.
“Buehler pitched six scoreless innings at San Diego on Aug. 8, but his momentum did not continue. He surrendered six runs on eight hits and eight walks over his next two starts,” Lutz wrote. “He parlayed that into a one-year deal with the Red Sox with a $21.05 million guarantee, even after a rough 2024 regular season in which Buehler had a 5.38 ERA.”
The Sox were expecting Buehler to be the World Series star he was, but it simply never happened.

“The turnaround for Buehler, a two-time All-Star who owns a 3.55 ERA and 54-29 regular-season record, has not happened in Boston. He allowed 27 runs during five starts in June and has not righted the ship enough to keep his spot in the rotation,” Lutz concluded.
Hopefully, Buehler finds his footing in the bullpen, as if he doesn’t, there’s a chance the Sox just straight up cut him, eat his contract, and promote a top pitching prospect.
