Stephen Curry’s relentless off-ball movement inspires Series 7 ‘super shoe’ combining running tech and innovation

CHONGQING, CHINA — Stephen Curry continues to push the limits of basketball and now he’s bringing that same energy to his sneakers.

The Under Armour Curry Series 7, which officially releases today in the ‘World Tour’ colourway, combines the latest in running technology, harnessing lightweight agility, long-haul durability, and elite responsiveness.

The Series 7 features a supercritical foam midsole, with a new high-abrasion UA Flow outsole for cushioning, grip, and enhanced durability, specifically tailored to Curry’s game.

“It’s kind of putting in as much tech and innovation into the shoes, so that it helps me perform at the highest level,” Curry told reporters in Chongqing during his Asia Tour.

“I debuted them during the playoffs last year in Game 3 against the Rockets…they’re really light, but they make you feel fast and comfortable on the floor, so you can do whatever you want. They did that for me on the court.”

Taking a leaf out of the running world’s quest to create a super shoe, Curry’s Series 7 aims to help increase speed and traction for every cut, drive, and off-ball movement, building the perfect shoe for Curry’s high-octane style of play.

In the 2024-25 season, Curry covered an average of 2.40 miles per game, per NBA Stats, with his constant off-ball movement, coming off screens and getting up and down the floor, the bane of every defender’s existence.

The idea for the shoe came from a 2023 meeting between Curry and Under Armour designers, where Curry broached the idea of creating a basketball shoe with running technology.

“We actually met with him a couple of years ago at his house, and we had the innovation team, we’re showing him a bunch of prototypes, and he tried on some running shoes using foams that are in our Velociti series now,” Gabe Heller, the Managing Director of Curry Brand told The Sporting News.

“He was like ‘this is incredible. What would a basketball shoe feel like? Could we make a basketball shoe feel like this’?

“That’s what we delivered. Literally, that was the insight from him, and that’s what we chased against. It’s him embracing that, knowing that it’s easy to get comfortable, and he continues to push. He challenges us. We have to be the best. Because that’s the standard that he sets. We have to live up to it on the product side.”

Curry, who first signed with Under Armour in 2013, before creating his own division ‘Curry Brand’ in 2020, to which he was then named as President in 2023 has taken a hands-on role in providing athlete insights, product development, marketing and facilitating the growth of the athlete roster.

“Watching him come to product meetings, he literally comes there with a pen and pad, and he’s taking notes and asking questions,” Under Armour Senior Footwear Designer Reggie Wilson told The Sporting News.

It’s something that you don’t see often. He’s really studious when it comes to his product.

“Obviously, his name has to go on it, it’s one of the things that I was just really impressed with. ‘Man, he’s taking notes, writing everything down, asking questions’. He is one-on-one in so many different ways.”

The Under Armour Curry Series 7 ‘World Tour’ sneaker releases August 22.
