Luis Diaz breaks silence on why he chose to join Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have had a frustrating summer transfer window as they have struggled to get deals over the line. Luis Diaz, Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah are the only three players signed by the club.

Out of the three, Diaz has been the most high-profile signing as he moved to Bavaria for a whopping €75m ($87.8m) transfer fee after helping Liverpool win the Premier League last season.

The Colombian has already made an impact by scoring in his professional debut for Bayern in their 2-1 win over Stuttgart in the DFL Supercup.

Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga 2025/26 opener against RB Leipzig, Diaz sat for an interview with the league’s official website.

When asked about his decision to join Bayern Munich, the Colombian stated, “What attracted me was Bayern’s expectations, because it’s no secret that they’re a very big club. I already knew a lot about what Bayern are about. They came for me, they believed in me. That was a really important point in choosing them and joining.

“It’s a club with a huge amount of history, a club that’s won everything at international level. It’s a very big challenge for me to be part of such a big club. I’m going to try and give my all to keep making history, keep winning titles, to win important things.

“That’s always what people remember, what stays in the memories of us footballers. I’m very happy to be part of this great club. Hopefully we’ll keep going like this. We’ve started really well. We’re going to try and keep working as we are to have a great start to the season.”

What did Diaz say about his connection with Bayern Munich stars Harry Kane and Michael Olise?

Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany are known for their fluid gameplay and ultra-aggressive attacking mentality.

Therefore, Diaz needs to have great synergy with fellow attackers like Harry Kane and Michael Olise, who have been the standout players for Bayern Munich last season.

“I’m proud to be part of this club and to play alongside incredible players like Harry,” the Colombian shared when asked about playing with Kane and Olise. “I’ve known about him for a long time. Olise also played in the English Premier League. They’re all part of this team, they’re great players. They’ve got incredible quality. Playing alongside Harry is great for me. He’s a player who can get on well with anyone. You just need a movement to form an understanding.

“Olise is a bit more like what I usually do as he looks to dribble. He has a lot of assists and goals. And when the game’s a bit tough, he goes for a 1v1. You need players of their magnitude. They’re incredible players. I feel really happy to be sharing the pitch with them.”

The 2024/25 campaign was Diaz’s best season professionally in terms of goals output as he returned with 17 goals and five assists from 50 appearances for the Reds in a record-breaking season.

The 28-year-old will be looking to replicate that form in Bavaria as the German champions aim to push their boundaries in the new season.
