Key Lions offensive lineman receives injury scare during Thursday practice

The Lions have already played three preseason games, but they still have one remaining before they can move onto the regular season.

This is because the Lions and Chargers played in the Hall of Fame Game, so they get one more preseason game than the other teams. While some may see that as a negative, it could also be seen as a positive due to the extra evaluation.

The Lions are preparing to take on the Texans to wrap the preseason up, and during Thursday’s practice, a key player had to leave with an injury. You hate to see injuries to anybody, but especially to players who figure to be key cogs of the team.

Graham Glasgow, the starting center, left practice early and was evaluated for a lower leg injury, according to Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit. One encouraging sign was that Glasgow was able to walk off under his own power, but he did not return to practice.

If Glasgow misses any time, the team could be in trouble. Former starting center Frank Ragnow retired this offseason, which is why Glasgow was moved back to center from left guard. Behind Glasgow, the Lions have Kingsley Eguakun and Trystan Colon.

In 2024, Glasgow played 1,027 snaps at left guard for the Lions. The veteran earned a 57.9 overall Pro Football Focus grade, but he has provided better results in the past at the center position.

Glasgow originally entered the league as a third-round pick by the Lions out of Michigan in the 2016 NFL Draft. Glasgow played out his rookie contract with the Lions, playing at guard and center, and then signed with the Broncos in 2020.

After three seasons in Denver, Glasgow re-signed with Detroit ahead of the 2023 season. The veteran has mostly played at guard since returning to the Motor City, but Ragnow’s retirement changed the plans for 2025.

It’s unknown how serious Glasgow’s injury is, but we can probably expect an update on Friday. Glasgow likely wouldn’t have played in the preseason finale anyway, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see him take the field against the Texans.

If Glasgow misses time, it will be interesting to see if the team trusts Eguakun to man the starting center spot. If not, the free agent options are currently slim, with Nick Harris and Nick Gates the most notable available options.

The Lions will hope to avoid any more injury scares before preparing to take on the Packers in Week 1 on September 7.
