Longtime Boston Celtic expected to sign with the Warriors

The Boston Celtics will officially take another hit to their frontcourt depth in the near future, as Al Horford is expected to sign with the Golden State Warriors, which will include a player option, per NBA insider Jake Fischer.

Horford spent seven seasons with the Celtics across two separate stints, one from 2016-19, and again from 2021-25. Horford made one All-Star appearance with the Celtics during the 2017-18 season, and was a key figure in the team’s run as contenders for the last decade, which came full circle when the Celtics were crowned the 2024 NBA champions.

The Celtics have suffered significant losses to their depth this offseason

Horford averaged 11.2 points, and 6.8 rebounds per game during his time in Boston, and will now join a long list of Celtics departures this offseason. Along with Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet, and Jrue Holiday are all on different teams now. Couple this with the fact that Jayson Tatum will be out for most of, if not all of next season with a torn achilles, and the Celtics look like a shell of themselves compared to their championship roster just two seasons ago.

With Horford officially gone, the Celtics will look to replace the production left behind by him, and will need to beef up their frontcourt substantially considering the losses they’ve suffered. Next season could be a bit of a weird transition year for the Celtics, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team focus more so on the 2026-27 season when they’ll return to full strength.
