It’s been a busy day for the 49ers wide receiver room.
A few hours after learning that Demarcus Robinson would be suspended for three games stemming from a 2024 DUI that he pleaded no contest to, San Francisco swung a trade with the Chiefs for a former Super Bowl hero.
The 49ers acquired Skyy Moore and a seventh-round draft pick from Kansas City for a sixth-round draft pick on Wednesday. Moore will likely be glad to get a chance for a fresh start after failing to live up to the hype of a former second-round pick, even playing with Patrick Mahomes.
Moore had a decent rookie season with 250 receiving yards, but he didn’t take a step forward in his second season, outside of a short touchdown reception in Kansas City’s Super Bowl win over Philadelphia. He had 244 yards and a score in 2023 before taking a monster step back in 2024. Moore didn’t bring in any of his three targets last year and was a potential roster cut for Kansas City in 2025.

San Francisco is dealing with an absurd number of issues with its receiver corps in the preseason. Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL in 2024 and is expected to be out for at least six weeks of the 2025 season as he continues to recover.
Jauan Jennings has a calf injury and is also wanting a new contract. Robinson got suspended, Cowing had a hamstring injury that he aggravated, and Jordan Watkins is dealing with a high-ankle sprain.
Even if Moore hasn’t had much success in Kansas City over the last year, he gets a fresh start and joins a Kyle Shanahan offense. Ricky Pearsall is expected to be a focal point of the passing attack at the start of the season. Moore could play his way into the WR2 role with all of the injuries across the 49ers’ offense. Alternatively, he could be a temporary replacement until the players are healthy, after which he could be cut. Stereotypically, NFL analysts say “the best ability is availability,” so Moore at least has the fact that he is healthy going for him.
