Minnesota Wild reportedly making progress on contract extension with key RFA

It appears as if one of the top remaining restricted free agents in the NHL will soon be coming off the board.

Wild center Marco Rossi has been a hot topic of discussion this offseason, involved in a plethora of trade rumors throughout, but he might end up staying in Minnesota after all.

According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, Rossi and the Wild have made significant progress on a contract extension that could soon be finalized. He shared the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday morning.

“Hearing there has been significant progress toward a potential Marco Rossi signing by the #mnwild in the coming days. As we’ve been reporting, a bridge deal makes the most sense,” Russo wrote.

The 23-year-old is coming off a breakout 2024-25 campaign where he tallied 24 goals and 36 assists for 60 points in 82 games. It was the final season of his three-year, $2,590,002 entry-level contract signed back in 2020.

Rossi’s long-term future in Minnesota is still uncertain

Although an extension with the Wild is looming, Marco Rossi won’t be getting too comfortable just yet.

As Russo mentioned, the expectation is a bridge deal that pays Rossi in the $5 million range per season. General manager Bill Guerin and the organization have had their concerns about Rossi and his small stature, which is unlikely to change moving forward.

The ninth overall pick from 2020 is supremely talented and will need to continue to prove himself over the course of this next contract to put any of those concerns to bed.

It should help that he’ll get plenty of opportunity to play with star wingers Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy on a Minnesota team that’s relatively thin down the middle.
