We’re about halfway through the NBA offseason, and former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook is still a free agent after his year with the Denver Nuggets.
In 75 games with Denver, Westbrook started in 36 contests, averaging 13.3 points per game, along with 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists.
However, there is one team that expressed interest in Westbrook back in July, interest that likely still burns strong today.
The New York Knicks.
Westbrook to the Knicks?
“The New York Knicks addressed a lack of depth in the backcourt by adding the recently bought out Jordan Clarkson, but they were reportedly interested in Russ in July, and he could still provide a boost to the team’s playmaking,” wrote Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report.
Since Westbrook left the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, he’s mainly embarked on several one or two season-long stints with various teams, such as both of the Los Angeles teams, the Houston Rockets, and the Washington Wizards.
Last year it was the Nuggets, this year it could be the Knicks.
Westbrook has still shown that he is capable of his role, despite being about to enter his 18th NBA season, and pairing him alongside Jalen Brunson inside Madison Square Garden could be just what the future Hall of Famer needs in the waning years of his career, whether they share the court or Westbrook is used as a substitute.
Westbrook is the 2017 NBA MVP, a nine-time All-Star, a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team, and is the league’s all-time leader in career triple-doubles.
