It’s been a long road to recovery for starting pitcher Alex Cobb, while he continues to recover from inflammation in both his right and left hips. He’s received multiple injections to help with the recovery, but he’s yet to make his Detroit Tigers debut after signing last offseason.
After signing a one-year, $15 million deal with the Tigers, Cobb was set to have a large role with Detroit this season. His injury was discovered in Spring Training, and the multiple setbacks have kept him from playing.
Despite the constant discomfort, Cobb is still looking to return for the Tigers and has continued to do everything possible to get back on the mound for the team.
Tigers’ A.J. Hinch announces workload for Alex Cobb
Alex Cobb’s better days are behind him, but the former All-Star pitcher is expecting to take the mound for the Tigers at some point this season. After his most recent rehab start on Tuesday, Cobb pitched three innings, giving up zero hits, one walk, and striking out four.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced that a smaller workload for the pitcher in his outings could be the healthier, more productive formula for Alex Cobb.
“I think we’ve shrunk down the expectation internally on how long he can go in the game and now we’re trying to see how these two- and three-inning stints and how he bounces back from that. We want to keep him stretched out into that 30-, 40-, 50-pitch outing and we need to make sure he can get up and get into the game. He accomplished that last night. I think he was a little bit better,” Hinch said, according to MLive‘s Jacob Richman.
Injuries have been a big problem for the 37-year-old, but when healthy, he produces. This is why the Tigers were willing to give Cobb a high-paying deal back in December.
Injuries have kept him off the mound these past few seasons. His last fully healthy year was in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants. He was given an All-Star nod while finishing with a 7-7 record, 3.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 131 strikeouts in 151.1 innings through 28 starts.
