The Detroit Tigers have some of the best prospects in baseball. Their top prospect, Kevin McGonigle, is ranked highly in all prospect rankings and is only rising those rankings.
Detroit has other incredible prospects, like Max Clark, but McGonigle has been at a different level. He’s one of the more enticing prospects in baseball, and an MLB prospect analyst agrees.
Geoff Pontes of Baseball America wrote a piece on the top ten prospects with incredible hitting metrics. McGonigle ranked second, and Pontes shared a bold and exciting take on the Tigers’ top prospect.
McGonigle Has Sky-High Potential
“McGonigle boasts a 70-grade hit tool with potentially 80-grade swing decisions and 6-grade power.” Pontes writes. “Based on historical data benchmarks, McGonigle looks like a future superstar in the making.”
Pontes says that based on his player profile, McGonigle has the tools needed to be a superstar. If his belief comes true, then the Tigers would have an incredible player waiting to get the call-up to the Majors.
The 21-year-old shortstop prospect is the second-ranked prospect in baseball, and the top Tigers prospect by MLB Pipeline. He’s ascended the minor league levels this season, starting in Single-A, before making it to High-A, and now Double-A.

At every stop, he’s been a dominant hitter. In Double-A, he’s hitting .294 with a 1.011 OPS in 27 games. He has 30 hits in 102 at-bats with 20 runs, eight doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 27 RBIs, 18 walks, and only 13 strikeouts.
In his minor league career, spanning 164 games, McGonigle is hitting .320 with a .938 OPS, 195 hits, 49 doubles, six triples, and 20 home runs. While his power is still a work in progress, 14 of his 20 home runs have come this season, and there’s plenty of reason to believe he’ll be an incredible hitter in the Majors.
Pontes’ scouting report on McGonigle is a very exciting one for Tigers fans. While he still needs to prove it in the Majors, Pontes believes he has all of the tools needed to be a superstar in the Major Leagues.
