Celtics trade proposal sends Jaylen Brown to East rival for pair of recent top 5 picks

The Boston Celtics are still looking for some more talent for their next season of contention, and there might be a perfect opportunity this summer.

This offseason has been a rough one in Boston. After winning the NBA title in 2024, the Celtics saw Jayson Tatum tear his Achilles in a second-round loss to the New York Knicks, prompting a teardown of their championship core.

With Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis getting traded, and Luke Kornet and Al Horford also departing, Boston needs a big deal to reload. However, they might be wise to continue its teardown to ensure a better future.

Jaylen Brown on the way out?

While the Celtics haven’t been interested in sending out their Finals MVP, Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes might have come up with a perfect deal. Listing Ron Holland II as one of the league’s top trade pieces, Buckley proposed a deal that sends Brown to Detroit.

Celtics receive: Ron Holland II, Jaden Ivey, Tobias Harris, 2027 first-round pick (top-4 protected)

Pistons receive: Jaylen Brown

Although it might not be a perfect deal for the Celtics, Buckley noted that it would save Boston an additional $7.7 million. While it might seem that with Tatum leading, the team should be in win-now mode, he is still only 27 and could easily team up with a couple of high-upside players in Holland and Ivey for future runs.

This could also give Holland and Ivey a runway to develop without too much pressure next season, as the Celtics will essentially be taking a gap year. It might still seem unthinkable for Boston to trade Brown, but this deal might just be worth it.
