The Philadelphia 76ers have plenty of talent, but they might need to cash in on their top assets.
This summer has been an interesting one for the 76ers. While the team has added VJ Edgecombe through the draft, it has also seen Guerschon Yabusele walk in free agency and is still figuring out Quentin Grimes’ future. Despite all of the distractions, the 76ers are hopeful for a bounce-back season.
While not much went right for the 76ers last year, Jared McCain was a brief bright spot before his season-ending injury. Although 76ers fans might not like it, the team could be better off if it capitalizes on McCain’s hot rookie campaign.
Would trading Jared McCain be the right move?
In a recent Bleacher Report article, Grant Hughes proposed that the 76ers should send out McCain. Although it would be a lackluster return for a player tabbed the league’s most valuable trade piece, Hughes’ deal might make sense.
76ers receive: Keegan Murray
Kings receive: Jared McCain, Kelly Oubre Jr.
Hughes explained that McCain’s first couple of months of NBA action can’t be taken too seriously. Considering Murray has already established himself as a great 3-and-D forward, Hughes also noted that he would be a perfect fit for the 76ers when Paul George inevitably misses time.
While the 76ers would still be in a great spot if they entered next season with McCain and tried to see how he can operate in his second season, there’s a chance that a deal for a player like Murray might not be available if McCain has a rough start next season. In any case, the 76ers have options and might need to explore some uncomfortable conversations.
