Should the Red Sox target three-time All-Star, NLCS MVP this offseason to solve their second base problem?

The Boston Red Sox didn’t make any major moves this trade deadline, as it seemed the prices were too high for anything really good. However, during the offseason, prices come down, and more options are available.

One option that might be available is Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, who has seemed to be causing a stir within the organization, per Bob Nightengale.

“The worst-kept secret in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization is out: They will listen to offers on All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte this winter, knowing that while Marte is extremely talented, he can be a diva in the clubhouse, agitating his teammates and coaching staff,” Nightingale wrote.

This season, Marte has continued to be a star, slashing .297/.397/.555/.952 with 23 home runs. He’s also a switch hitter, which is very valuable for the Sox.

Why would the Sox want him? Because right now, second base has been truly unfilled since the days of Dustin Pedroia. Right now, they split Ceddanne Rafaela and Romy Gonzalez at second, but Rafaela struggles to hit while playing second, and Gonzalez is a very good bench player, but not an everyday starter.

There was Marcelo Mayer, who was the starter, but he’s out with a season-ending injury. However, he could be the focal point in getting Marte. A trade headlined by him, and a few other prospects in the Sox’ star-studded farm could get a deal done.

Marte will be a 10 and 5 player at the start of next season, so the DBacks will have to act fast, meaning they either make a deal this offseason, keep Marte, or deal him somewhere he wants to go.

Hopefully the Sox at least inquire about Marte, as he could be another consistent bat the streaky offense needs.
