If Patriots target Trey Hendrickson, age and salary could complicate deal

The New England Patriots need elite defensive ends like Trey Hendrickson, especially after their defense struggled last season to generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. But the question remains: is Hendrickson the right fit for their needs?

The Cincinnati Bengals have indicated they are open to trade offers for the NFL’s reigning sack leader. However, the Patriots organization should think twice before pursuing a deal.

CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin says New England will face a complicated decision if it targets Hendrickson in a trade, given his age and salary demands.

The analyst has emphasized that the Patriots should pursue Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons if the opportunity arises, but he does not share the same enthusiasm for acquiring Hendrickson.

Dubin points out significant factors that could complicate a deal.

“The difference between Parsons and Hendrickson is that Parsons is 26 and Hendrickson is already 30 years old and turning 31 later this year,” he said.

Unlike Parsons, whose potential contract extension would cover the prime years of his career, an extension for Hendrickson would likely cover ages 31 to 34 or 35.

“A time during which players often experience decline,” Dubin noted.

Dubin also noted the financial implications. “He’d also have to be paid at or near the top of the market, and we know he wants (and deserves) multiple years of guaranteed money on a new deal,” he added.

On Monday, Eliot Wolf, the team’s executive vice president of player personnel, confirmed they’re willing to trade a first-round pick for a player worthy of that value. This will likely attract interest from other teams looking to do business. However, the Patriots should avoid acquiring Trey Hendrickson.
