Cristian Romero has underlined his commitment to Tottenham Hotspur by signing a new four-year contract, a deal that keeps him at the club until 2029 and strengthens Thomas Frank’s project in north London.
The World Cup-winning defender was targeted by Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, but Spurs moved swiftly to secure their captain’s future.
Romero had two years remaining on his existing contract, yet the club acted quickly after Son Heung-min’s departure to LAFC left a void in leadership.
Frank confirmed the Argentine as his new captain ahead of the European Super Cup, a decision that now aligns with the fresh long-term deal.
Romero has been vital player for Spurs since arriving from Atalanta for around £47m [$63m] in 2021 and although he was limited to 18 Premier League appearances last season due to injuries and rotation, his influence was vital in their Europa League triumph under Ange Postecoglou.

That commitment has drawn high praise from his new head coach.
Thomas Frank hails Tottenham star as one of the Premier League’s best defenders
Thomas Frank offered an emphatic endorsement of his captain, saying [via Last Word On Spurs]: “For me, he’s one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and, to have him locked down long-term, every fan, me, staff, should be extremely happy.”
He added: “It also shows he’s committed to the journey we’re on and the future and the bits we’re building together.”
Frank insisted that Romero’s leadership qualities would grow further under the added responsibility of captaincy.
“He will thrive under this captaincy. No doubt it was something he was hoping to be and wanted to be.
When you have that approach, normally people take another step up and really want to go to the next level in terms of leadership. I have no doubt he will drive the team and players and help in any way he can.”
Frank concluded by reminding supporters that Romero’s leadership will develop with experience: “There’s more responsibility and we also need to remember he’s a young leader so he will learn and be even better.”
The Argentine’s new deal now ensures Spurs’ defensive foundation is set for years to come.
