Bears QB Caleb Williams Opens Up About Ben Johnson’s Effect

Caleb Williams put any concerns about him having issues grasping the offense under the new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson. Williams completed 6 of 10 passes while recording a touchdown as part of the Bears’ 38-0 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.

After his brief performance in Chicago’s second preseason, Williams spoke during the game with FOX Sports’ Pam Oliver and was asked about Johnson’s impact during training camp to help prepare him for Week 1.

“It’s important for being able to accomplish something that we all want to accomplish at the end of the day,” Williams told Oliver. “So, being able to have a coach like that, it’s great. He pushes everybody, but he also shows that he cares. So it’s been important for us to have him. We’re excited to be able to go out there and fight for him and with him.”

Entering Year 2 under a new head coach, Williams faces pressure to make significant progress, especially with an offensive-minded coach like Johnson. He and his teammates must continue navigating the challenges of learning a new offense during practice and preseason.

With the Detriot Lions, Johnson was able to get the most out of Jared Goff after being sent away as a cast off by the Los Angeles Rams. Nonetheless, he was able to find a home and confidence with the Lions as Johnson played an important role. As a result, the Bears hope he has the same impact on Williams as he did with Goff.

The 23-year-old’s most memorable moment during training came in a fast-paced throwing challenge, where he had to hit targets in a net. Williams struggled with accuracy, and his emotional reaction quickly caught the attention of the national media. Still, his strong performance against the Bills could ease concerns at least until the regular season begins.
