Broncos sign fullback who began his career in Denver, place Nick Gargiulo on IR

The Denver Broncos are dealing with some injuries at the fullback and tight end positions, with Nate Adkins (ankle) and Michael Burton (hamstring) both on the mend. In addition to playing tight end, Adkins is a guy who can also play fullback.

But with Burton down with a hamstring injury, the Broncos brought in three fullbacks for tryouts: Khari Blasingame, Adam Prentice and Troy Hairston. They ended up signing Prentice, who actually began his career in Denver.

Prentice was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Broncos in 2021 and spent that summer with the team. After being waived, he was claimed by the New Orleans Saints, who were then coached by Sean Payton. He has spent the past four seasons with the Saints as a fullback and core special teams player.

His signing becomes important as he could have a real shot to begin the season on the 53-man roster, depending on how long Burton and/or Adkins will be out. Prentice has played in 48 career games and has 26 yards rushing and 37 yards receiving on eight catches. But his game is being a lead blocker in the rushing attack, and he excels in that area.

One other option the Broncos are likely to strongly consider is to keep tight end Caden Prieskorn on the 53-man roster, as he has shifted over to the tight end/fullback role with Adkins being out.

To make room on the roster for Prentice, the Broncos placed offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo on injured reserve. Gargiulo was carted off the field on Saturday night with what appeared to be a devastating knee injury, which will end his season. It’s a tough blow for Gargiulo, who was trending towards being on the 53-man roster.
