The Detroit Tigers made a plethora of moves at MLB’s trade deadline to help improve their pitching depth. Some of the notable additions were Chris Paddack, Kyle Finnegan, Charlie Morton, and Rafael Montero.
Despite playing like one of the best teams in baseball up until the All-Star break, they have hit a bit of a rough patch in the last month.
Luckily for Detroit, they may have made an addition at the deadline that could pay dividends in October.
Charlie Morton may find himself in the Tigers’ playoff rotation
The addition of Charlie Morton didn’t turn any heads, but after a tough start to the season, the 41-year-old Morton has fared well in two of his three Detroit starts.
There was a clunker mixed in on August 9, when he gave up six earned runs. However, in his other two starts, he lasted six innings and gave up zero and one earned runs. Those starts were against Minnesota and Philadelphia.
The start that he gave up six runs, he also struck out 10 batters. All in all, over 16.1 innings with the Tigers, Morton has given up seven runs and has 21 strikeouts.
Even Chris Paddack has been able to go 1-1 in his three starts with the team and a 3.45 ERA. With some question marks lately surrounding Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize, either Morton or Paddack may see themselves get meaningful innings in October.
