Ashton Jeanty shakes off early injury scare, dominates vs. 49ers in bounce-back performance

In a landscape that calls on teams to invest little into the running back position, the Raiders took a different approach. Las Vegas selected Boise State workhorse Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 pick in the draft, hoping he — along with Brock Bowers, Maxx Crosby, and Geno Smith — could bring the franchise back to glory after years of torpidity.

It is only preseason, but Jeanty’s display during the Raiders’ preseason affair with the 49ers will certainly inspire confidence among the masses of Las Vegas supporters.

Jeanty offered spectators a window into his gleaming bag of tricks on Saturday afternoon. Here’s what you need to know about the numbers behind Jeanty’s starring showing against the Niners.

Ashton Jeanty stats today vs. 49ers

  • Carries: 7
  • Rush Yards: 33
  • Yards Per Attempt: 4.7
  • TDs: 1
  • Receptions: 1
  • Receiving Yards: 2

Jeanty’s preseason debut was fairly underwhelming. He reprised his role in the backfield on Saturday. Matched up against San Francisco, Jeanty found far more success.

The Boise State alum gashed the Niners’ rearguard in the first half, averaging nearly five yards a carry and breaching the end zone for his first touchdown. Jeanty brandished both his top-line speed and physicality throughout his cameo, wreaking havoc on the Niners’ weary defenders.

Jeanty tallied 33 yards and a score on seven carries on Saturday afternoon. He also inflicted pain upon his opposition, delivering bruising blows to Tatum Bethune and Deommodore Lenoir, respectively. The former of those looked to have dented some of Jeanty’s armor. He was briefly escorted to the blue medical tent after colliding with Bethune out in the flat.

He would emerge from the structure one possession later. He swiftly returned to form, collecting bodies before scampering into paradise via a one-yard run. Postgame, Raiders quarterback Geno Smith said Jeanty will be a “special player,” and last season’s Heisman runner-up was feeling confident as well.

“I’ve arrived, and it’s time to keep going and make plays for this team,” Jeanty said, per ESPN.

All told, Jeanty showed just why Las Vegas felt compelled to use its first-round selection on him.
