Jonathan Kuminga contract standoff could derail Warriors plan this offseason

The contract standoff with Jonathan Kuminga could derail the Golden State Warriors’ plans for the offseason. Kuminga has already rejected a two-year deal from the franchise, leaving Golden State with no option but to either give a lucrative deal to the restricted free agent or trade him off.

Without a resolution with Kuminga, the Warriors could not pursue key targets like Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Seth Curry and other players. NBA insider Anthony Slater notes that while August is a grace period, September may bring more urgency and friction.

“It’s the same names we’ve all been talking about for six weeks now,” Slater said. “Al Horford, he’s clearly ticketed to be their starting center if that gets wrapped up. De’Anthony Melton is a name they like. Seth Curry. Their second-round pick, Will Richard, is a guy expected to potentially be on their roster. Gary Payton II.

“August is a lot easier for people to just be like, ‘OK, we’ll get to you when we get to you’. September starts to get a little more uncomfortable in this entire situation. And that’s where, I don’t know if there will be movement or a little bit more angst in the Warriors or Kuminga’s side, but September is where this could get a little dicey.”

The Warriors have offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million offer, which includes a team option for the second year and requires him to waive his no-trade clause. The Warriors player finds this offer unfavorable. In the scenario where the Warriors are neither unable to extend him nor trade him off, he’ll sign a $7.9 million qualifying offer, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
