The Green Bay Packers are reaching the point in training camp where potential roster cuts are becoming increasingly evident. For Mecole Hardman, it’s becoming clear that he may not bring enough value to a crowded wide receiver room — especially after a disappointing preseason opener.
“I just needed to make better decisions. I made two bad decisions, so that’s all on me. It happened fast, so you just want to make something happen. At the end of the day, I’ve just got to make better decisions,” Hardman told the media.
Heading into the opener, Hardman was already a long shot to make the roster — and his performance only made matters worse.
“Hardman was already descending the depth chart even before the game, but his performance didn’t help matters at all. Chiefs fans will remember well how Hardman would decide to field punts inside the five-yard line, and he did the same for the Packers on a bizarre preseason decision that infuriated Packers faithful. Even worse was the fact that Hardman dropped a pass, when given few opportunities in the first place, and then muffed another punt return opportunity,” Arrowhead Addict’s Matt Conner wrote.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport echoed that sentiment, suggesting the Packers may want to move on.
“Based on his performance in Green Bay’s preseason opener, though, Hardman could start the 2025 season looking for work,” Davenport wrote. “But Hardman has never come especially close to living up to his draft slot. And on a Packers team loaded with young talent at wide receiver, he has no margin to make the sort of errors he made in his Green Bay debut.”

It’s a disheartening situation for Hardman, who not long ago was a Super Bowl hero. The odds were always stacked against him — joining a young, competitive wide receiver corps meant he needed an exceptional training camp and a standout preseason. So far, that hasn’t materialized.
