Getafe president Angel Torres recently went on an interview to preview the start of La Liga season on Radio Marca and ended up having some choice words for the league.
He first started by criticizing the potential decision of a Villareal vs Barcelona game being played in the U.S. He said that at first he thought it was a “joke” and couldn’t believe that the league wouldn’t consult the other presidents about it.
His point ended up being that the league can not claim to be the best in the world if it’s so desperate to play a game away from the country.
Then he started discussing the topic about the league and his beliefs about the registration process and why he has a problem with it.
Torres said, “We’ve given away Omar Alderete, one of the best centre-backs in La Liga, to a newly promoted Premier League club for peanuts just so that I could have 16-17 players registered by Sunday”.
These midtable and lower table sides constantly have to sell their best players just to register players meaning talent is consistently leaving the league for less than their value.
Torres also talks about how registration troubles damage the league’s reputation and labeling the league “the laughing stock of Europe”.
This has become a common sentiment about the registration process as teams like Sevilla and Levante are severely struggling to register players just a day from the La Liga start.
There has to be change as teams become unhappier with the process of registration and as Torres said, it ruins the reputation of the league.
