If teams are going to be competitive and in a playoff race for the final month of the season, they have to beat the Colorado Rockies. The St. Louis Cardinals were unable to do that and took another devastating loss on Wednesday.
The loss meant their second series loss of the season to the worst team in all of baseball, and a season series loss of 4-2. St. Louis fell to 4.5 games behind the final wildcard spot in the National League as well.
The Cardinals led 5-4 heading into the ninth inning. JoJo Romero walked Kyle Karros, the lead-off hitter, before falling behind pinch-hitter Brenton Doyle. He finally got Doyle to strike out looking. That was when Hunter Goodman came up and smacked a two-run home run to center field to bring Colorado back from a 5-2 deficit and take a 6-5 lead.

Romero took the loss and is now 4-4 on the season. Colorado got a win for Jimmy Herget, his first of the season.
The Cardinals went weakly in the bottom of the ninth as Thomas Saggesse flied out to start the inning, Pedro Pages followed suit, and Brendan Donovan did the same thing. Victor Vodnik recorded the save with just 10 pitches.
The win was just the 32nd of the season for Colorado in 120 games this season. The Rockies came to St. Louis on a seven-game losing streak. During that seven-game losing streak, the Rockies allowed 79 runs. That is more than 11 runs per game.

During the three-game series with the Cardinals, St. Louis scored just a total of eight runs, including getting shut out on Tuesday.
Colorado will now head home and host the Arizona Diamondbacks for a four-game series. St. Louis will take Thursday off before it hosts the New York Yankees for a three-game series over the weekend.
