Commanders predicted to release $5M power back in contract year, per jaw-dropping report

The Washington Commanders haven’t had the easiest offseason, especially when it comes to satisfying one of their cornerstone players, Terry McLaurin. Since June, McLaurin has expressed frustration with the organization over their slow pace in negotiating a contract extension. Months later, little has changed — but there has been an important update on his contract status.

“Both sides have remained firm in their stances. For Washington, the fact that McLaurin will turn 31 when an extension begins has been a key factor. But he was drafted in the same 2019 class as DK Metcalf and has been equally productive. After getting traded to the Steelers this offseason, Metcalf signed a contract worth $33 million per year with $60 million guaranteed. That deal has served as a guide for McLaurin’s demands,” ESPN staff wrote.

While the front office navigates that situation, the team also faces big roster decisions with the regular season fast approaching. One of the most surprising developments came from Commanders insider Ben Standig, who floated the possibility that running back Brian Robinson Jr. could be a cut candidate.

“I’m gonna guess Brian Robinson is not on the Week 1 roster. I have no insight into that … If Croskey-Merritt’s on this team, I just don’t know how you’re sitting him,” Standig said.

This would be a major blow for Robinson, who is entering a contract year and hoping to solidify his future in the NFL.

“Washington Commanders’ running back Brian Robinson Jr. knows that the 2025 season will be a crucial one for him and his NFL future. With B-Rob entering the final year of his rookie deal, he knows that he must show that he deserves a contract next season, and he will get ample opportunities to prove he can be ‘the’ guy for Kliff Kingsbury,” Athlon Sports’ Adam Schultz wrote.

Robinson has overcome major adversity during his time in Washington, making this potential roster move all the more shocking. With the Commanders coming off a solid offensive year, his place on the chopping block is difficult to believe — but only time will tell what’s next in this unexpected development.
