Last year’s top two European champions meet with a trophy on the line as Champions League title winners Paris Saint-Germain match up against Europa League champs Tottenham in Italy on Wednesday.
The annual UEFA Super Cup is a showcase match between the previous year’s title winners to kick off the new campaign and serve as a curtain-raiser for the European season.
PSG finally summited the UCL mountain they had so desperately craved to climb last season, topping it off with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the final. They reached the precipice of a Club World Cup title this past summer in the United States as well, but fell to Chelsea at the final stage.
Spurs, meanwhile, lifted the Europa League trophy in Ange Postecoglou’s second season, but the title wasn’t enough to save his job having concurrently finished a dreadful 17th in the Premier League table. New manager Thomas Frank will be tasked with navigating this match, just two days before the new Premier League season begins with Liverpool vs. Bournemouth at Anfield.

PSG vs. Tottenham lineups: Predicted starting XI, team news, injuries
Goalkeeping star Gianluigi Donnarumma, who played an enormous role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season and has been at the heart of the club’s success in recent years, was left out of the squad for this match, indicating he could be on his way out amidst a contract dispute.
PSG spent big money on securing Lucas Chevalier this summer as a replacement in net, and much of the recent reporting indicates he is seen as the club’s No. 1 moving forward, with Donnarumma likely set for an exit.
Also missing for PSG is Joao Neves, who is suspended for this match as his red card in the Club World Cup final will carry over. Neves was sent off late in the game for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in PSG’s 3-0 defeat, and could be replaced by either Warren Zaire-Emery or Senny Mayulu. They will, however, get defender William Pacho back after he was suspended for the final two Club World Cup matches after a red card earlier in the competition.
PSG predicted starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Chevalier (GK) — Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes — Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz — Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia
Injured: None
Suspended: Neves (red card)
Tottenham’s seemingly endless injury struggles from last season appear to have carried over to the new campaign. Spurs lost James Maddison to an ACL injury in preseason, while Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin aren’t expected to be back from last season’s knee issues for another month at least.
There is some good news, however, as Dominic Solanke has been confirmed as available for the game. Destiny Udogie is not quite ready to return, though, and Yves Bissouma was left back at home for what the Spurs boss described as “disciplinary reasons”.
Frank will have to decide what his best attacking setup is, with Brennan Johnson, Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Richarlison, and Wilson Odobert all in the mix for three or four starting spots.
Tottenham predicted starting XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Vicario (GK) — Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence — Bentancur, Palhinha — Johnson, Sarr, Kudus — Solanke
Injured: Udogie (muscle), Maddison (ACL), Kulusevski (knee), Dragusin (ACL)
Suspended: None

PSG vs. Tottenham score prediction
Often the UEFA Super Cup presents an intriguing game between two sides with a smaller talent gap than perception may indicate. Even as the Champions League winner usually comes out on top, as they have in each of the last six and 11 of the last 12, it’s usually not without a fight.
That doesn’t seem to be the case this year. The gulf between these two teams is, in truth, even larger than the odds suggest, and it’s hard to imagine Spurs putting up any kind of challenge in this European curtain-raiser.
Until PSG vacate the property and someone else steps in to fill the space, the French club is undoubtedly the best team in the world. While single results can often fall outside expectations despite the relative standing between these two teams, it’s highly unlikely that Spurs have the ability to overcome the talent disparity here.
Prediction: PSG 3-1 Tottenham
