Brendan Donovan’s pinch hit double saves the day for Cardinals in win over Rockies

When you play a team that has won just 30 games in 117 on the season, you cannot afford to lose if you want any chance at the postseason. The St. Louis Cardinals, who lost two out of three earlier this season in Denver, were on the verge of losing Monday night.

That’s when Brendan Donovan came in and saved the day. Playing in his first action since Friday with a groin injury, Donovan doubled down the right field line, scoring two runs, and giving the Cardinals a 3-2 lead over the Colorado Rockies.

Donovan moved to third on the throw, but was doubled up on a line drive the next play. Fortunately for Oli Marmol’s squad, that did not matter, as Kyle Leahy slammed the door shut, getting the final three outs in the ninth to pick up the win.

Leahy got seven outs in the game, following 6.2 innings from Miles Mikolas in the game. Thomas Saggesse had his best hitting game of the season, with three hits for the Cardinals in the win.

With the victory, St. Louis is now 61-59 on the season. The Cardinals have moved to just a single game behind the Cincinnati Reds, and three games behind the New York Mets for the final wildcard in the National League.

The two teams will get together on Tuesday with Kyle Freeland, who is 2-12 on the season, taking on Matthew Liberatore, who sits at 6-9 on the season.
