With the Edmonton Oilers’ current roster, they’ll certainly be in a position to win a Stanley Cup next season.
However, one could strongly argue that until the Oilers have a competent goalie, they might not accomplish what they’re looking to.
The Oilers are still in a position to win it all next season, but replacing Stuart Skinner has to be at the top of that priority list.
Cole Shelton of Heavy Sports recently proposed a trade idea for them to do just that, pitching a deal for them to land Sebastian Cossa, a youngster who many believe could be a franchise goalie sometime in the near future.
Cossa only appeared in one game last season for the Detroit Red Wings, allowing two goals on 14 shot attempts.

Oilers acquire: Sebastian Cossa, Justin Holl
Red Wings acquire: Mattias Ekholm, 2026 second-round pick, 2028 third-round pick
“The proposed deal would be a blockbuster deal as Edmonton would acquire its franchise goalie and an NHL defenseman for a star defenseman and two draft picks.
“A big part of the deal for the Oilers would be Cossa, who could come in and compete for the starting job and be Edmonton’s goalie of the future as well. Cossa was selected 15th overall in 2021 and is one of the top goalie prospects in hockey. However, he doesn’t have a path to playing time, so Detroit could look to move him,” he wrote.
While this trade is intriguing, and getting back Justin Holl would also be something the Oilers would be in favor of, it’d be tough to justify in some sense.
Skinner needs to be replaced with a competent, proven goalie, and while Cossa could eventually be that, he hasn’t proven enough to suggest he is that.
