Celtics’ $45 million sharpshooter Sam Hauser linked to Western Conference contender

The Boston Celtics are retooling to avoid the second apron and financial constraints after losing several key pieces from their 2024 championship roster this summer.

The team is expected to lose Al Horford in free agency after Luke Kornet signed with the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to free agency, the Celtics traded away Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, though more moves may be on the horizon.

ESPN recently compiled a list of shooters the Los Angeles Lakers could target to surround Luka Doncic, naming Sam Hauser as a realistic trade candidate.

“It likely will be easier for the Lakers to find shooters than quality two-way big men in the years to come,” they wrote. “The current supply of shooting in the NBA is so great that the skill set is generally available for cheap.”

Hauser signed a four-year, $45 million extension with the Celtics last July and is under contract through the 2028-29 campaign. While the sharpshooter has provided a spark for the Celtics over the past three seasons, he is not untouchable by any means.

The 27-year-old forward’s contract could become a trade piece if the Celtics want to acquire a bigger name or shed more salary. Hauser is expected to see an expanded role in the 2025-26 campaign with Jayson Tatum’s return uncertain due to a torn Achilles. Hauser’s trade value could increase significantly, allowing Boston to flip him in an effort to return to title contention in 2026-27.

While Los Angeles has the pieces for a deep playoff run, the club has made it clear it is preparing for the future with Doncic. A move for Hauser could certainly be a long-term option worth exploring.
