Browns waive hometown wide receiver Luke Floriea after devastating injury update

For weeks, fans have been talking about the quickness and toughness of Mentor, Ohio, local Luke Floriea. At 5-feet-8, Floriea relies on quickness and toughness to make up for his lack of size, and that has been fully displayed in the Cleveland Browns’ training camp thus far.

After a tremendous one-handed catch in the Week 1 preseason game vs. the Carolina Panthers, Floriea came up holding his hamstring after going full extension for the snag.  Floriea attempted to come back into the game later but was eventually ruled out.

In Kevin Stefanski’s media time on Monday, it was announced that the injury to Floriea’s hamstring was “serious”, and more details were to come.  We later learned that Floriea was waived with an injury designation.  That means that Floriea will need to pass waivers and then would be eligible to return to the Browns’ practice squad.

The Browns don’t have a ton of experienced depth on the roster currently at wide receiver, but in a situation where there are four or five guys who could be fighting for one or two spots.  With the injury, it’s uncertain if a team will pick up Floriea, but waiving him was a calculated risk the Browns feel comfortable with.
