Cardinals legend’s dugout stay hints at desire for long-term MLB coaching role

Yadier Molina is one of the St. Louis Cardinals’ most talked-about franchise legends in recent times.

Molina spent the entirety of his 19-year MLB career with the franchise, winning two World Series championships and nine Gold Glove Awards behind the plate, in addition to attending 10 All-Star Games and picking up a Silver Slugger Award in 2013.

Conversations revolving around Molina picked up this past weekend, when he appeared in the Cardinals’ dugout for the team’s Friday and Saturday games against the Chicago Cubs. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, Molina is scheduled to be in St. Louis on business this week, and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol invited him to the dugout.

Denton later reported that Molina is interested in spending more weekends like this one with the team.

“Yadier Molina said he is hopeful that his two-day stint with the Cardinals isn’t a one-off event,” Denton wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Aug. 8. “He said he hopes to join the team a couple more times this season to offer advice — possibly again in two weeks when the team is in Florida.”

Last weekend wasn’t Molina’s first rodeo when it comes to coaching in baseball. He was the manager of the Puerto Rico national team during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and he currently manages Águilas Cibaeñas, a club in the Dominican Professional Baseball League.

Given his desire to eventually manage a Major League Baseball team, as well as the strong relationship he has with the Cardinals organization, Molina will likely return to the dugout later in the 2025 season. And if he does eventually get such a job in the big leagues, it will be hard to think of him wearing anything other than a Cardinals uniform.
