Jurrangelo Cijntje is the most unique pitcher in baseball.
He’s a switch-pitcher.
The Seattle Mariners’ promising prospect made his first Double-A start on Saturday, and he showed off both arms.
In the first, he notched his first Double-A strikeout, left-handed.
He picked up his next strikeout in the third inning, right-handed.

This is a major departure from the Mariners’ plans with Cijntje early in the season.
They were using him with one arm on the weekend and the other during the week, splitting up his outings.
Now, it looks like he’s pitching to the platoon advantage.
Both strategies could have merit at the major league level if Cijntje can pitch at a high effectiveness from both sides.
Even if one arm lags behind, he could wind up good enough with the other to get to the bigs.

It’s a huge deal for Cijntje to reach Double-A this season. It sets him up to get to Triple-A next year, and maybe even the majors. It also gives him a good shot at being in major league camp next year at spring training.
And when he’s on the mound, everyone will watch. Yes, Pat Venditte was a switch-pitcher, but he didn’t have stuff like this.
There’s never been a pitcher anything like Cijntje.
