Cristiano Ronaldo’s past criticism sparks a £236m Man Utd transformation

Manchester United are about to kick off the new season with a major off-the-pitch win — a brand-new £236 million first-team training complex at Carrington.

And if you ask Diogo Dalot, it’s the kind of change Cristiano Ronaldo was calling for years ago.

Back in January 2023, Ronaldo left Old Trafford with some sharp words about the club’s outdated facilities.

He claimed nothing had moved forward since his first stint — from the pool and jacuzzi to the gym and even the kitchen staff. “Progress is zero. You have to tear it down and rebuild it,” he told Piers Morgan at the time.

Two and a half years later, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has delivered exactly that. The INEOS chief oversaw a massive redevelopment during the 2024/25 season, with United now moving into the new base after their U.S. pre-season tour.

Ratcliffe described United as a global brand that should have facilities to match the biggest names in business.

Diogo Dalot reveals what Cristiano Ronaldo would think of Man Utd’s huge change

Dalot, who played alongside Ronaldo for club and country, was quick to make the connection.

“I’m sure he would love it if he would be able to see it,” Dalot said (quotes via The Mirror). “This club deserved even more and all credit to Sir Jim and his team… now there’s going to be no excuses.”

United’s new home isn’t just about comfort — it’s a statement. After a 15th-place Premier League finish and a Europa League final defeat last season, the club has already invested in players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, with Benjamin Sesko reportedly on the way.

Ratcliffe says the upgrade won’t win trophies alone, but insists it’s a vital step. In football terms, United have polished the training pitch — now they need to score on the real one.
