Mavericks coach Jason Kidd reunites with former assistant coach

Dru Anthrop and Jason Kidd are back on the same sideline again.

Anthrop, an alumnus of Purdue, announced Saturday after Purdue’s alumni basketball game that he had reunited with the Hall of Fame point guard, taking an assistant coaching coach under Kidd on the Mavericks.

Before, the two were on Frank Vogel’s coaching staff together with the Los Angeles Lakers, including when they won the 2020 NBA championship against the Miami Heat.

Anthrop worked in player development and video coordinating while in L.A., where he was from 2019 to 2023.

Kidd was with the team from 2019 to 2021 as an assistant head coach until departing to return to Dallas to take over Rick Carlisle’s head coaching position.

And based on how highly Anthrop thinks of Kidd, their relationship should help Dallas continue to thrive down the road.

“He’s a basketball savant,” Anthrop said, talking about the legendary Maverick. “When you are around people like that, you can just absorb everything they’ve got; all the knowledge about the game, the ins and outs of personalities of locker rooms.”

Since 2023, Anthrop has been working under Vogel again as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns.
