Anthony Richardson could’ve made a better first impression this preseason.
But his Indianapolis Colts start at quarterback on Thursday night was cut short when he dislocated the pinkie on his throwing hand on his second drive.
Richardson was brought down for a sack by Ravens rusher David Ojabo, and his right pinkie wound up bent outward.
After the game, Richardson described his thoughts in the moment, and he couldn’t quite believe it:
“You know, it was weird,” Richardson said. “He hit me, then I was trying to make sure I had the ball. I just looked down, I see my finger in a different direction. I’m like, maybe I’m tripping. I looked at it again, and it was definitely like that. So I’m like, I need to get this thing popped back in place and I’m good.”

Reports have already indicated Richardson won’t be out long, which is good for his chances of continuing to compete with Daniel Jones for the Indy starting job.
The playing time plan might have to change a bit. Richardson was supposed to get the majority of the time in the preseason opener, with Jones then getting the majority of the time in the second game.
Now that Jones saw a bunch of action on Thursday, maybe it’ll be Richardson who gets more in the next one.

There’s still a lot to be determined. It’s not obvious that either of these guys is the Colts’ long-term answer at QB.
They’ve been looking for that since Andrew Luck’s shock retirement, and their next chance may come in the QB-heavy 2026 NFL Draft.
For now, Richardson’s finger is back into place, and the competition between he and Jones will head into another week of action.
