The Indianapolis Colts have one of the most questionable quarterback rooms in the NFL. The starting job is expected to go to either Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson. Coming out of college, Richardson was projected to accomplish big things—but that just isn’t how the cookie crumbled. Bruce Arians was vocal in his belief that Richardson should have stayed in college for another year or two.
“Anthony, I think needed two more years of college… as a passer. I didn’t see him being able to beat anybody in 2-minute & 3rd down. If you can’t do that in the NFL you’re just an average guy,” Arians said.
It feels like this is Richardson’s last real opportunity to prove he can be the guy in Indianapolis. If he doesn’t show real development this season, his time with the Colts could come to a screeching halt.
“So, if there was ever a time for Richardson to put the pieces together in his development as a pro quarterback, now is certainly the moment to present that before he finds himself at risk of losing his starting job,” Sports Illustrated’s Jared Koch wrote.
In the Colts’ first preseason game on Thursday night, Richardson exited in the first quarter with a finger injury. He did not return, raising concern that the injury might be serious. However, on Friday morning, NFL insider Jordan Schultz provided an update on the situation.
“Colts QB Anthony Richardson, who was declared out last night with a finger injury, had all his X-rays come back clean and will be back on the practice field in the coming days, per source,” Schultz posted.

This is good news for Richardson, as a significant injury would have put enormous pressure on both him and the franchise. With Jones as the only viable quarterback option, the Colts may have been forced to sign or trade for a backup. The quarterback competition is far from over, but it appears Richardson still has a fighting chance to win the starting job—even after the finger injury.
