Tottenham’s €40m bid rejected as Real Madrid monitor rising star

There’s rarely a calm summer when Real Madrid and Premier League clubs find themselves circling the same names.

Recently, Tottenham Hotspur made a €40m [$46m] bid for Nico Paz, the 20-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder who now plies his trade at Como.

The Italian club quickly rejected the offer, as revealed by journalist Gianluca Di Marzio in his website.

According to his report, Como received and rejected a €40m offer from Tottenham Hotspur for Argentine attacking midfielder Nico Paz.

The club values the player at €70m [$81m], the same as Diao. Therefore, an offer of at least €60m [$69m]would be needed to start negotiations.

Spurs are desperate to fill the creative hole left by James Maddison’s ACL injury and had already failed in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White before turning to Paz.

But what complicates this story is Paz’s history with Real Madrid. Paz was once a Real Madrid player and joined Como last year for a modest €6m [$7m] fee.

Madrid, however, built strong safeguards into the deal. They hold a €9m [$10m] buy-back clause, valid until June 2026, which rises to €10m [$11m] the following year.

Crucially, they also secured a 50% sell-on clause, which means that had Como accepted Tottenham’s offer, only €20m [$23m] would’ve reached their accounts.

Real Madrid are monitoring Paz’s situation closely

According to Defensa Central, club president Florentino Perez and director Jose Angel Sanchez are fully aware of Como’s internal efforts to remove the clauses Madrid inserted.

Como wants complete control over Paz’s future, but that’s something Madrid is not willing to concede.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso, now managing the Real Madrid first team, is keeping a close eye on Paz’s development in Italy.

There’s hope he could bring him back next summer. However, the rise of young stars like Franco Mastantuono and Arda Guler could complicate the idea of slotting Paz back into the team.
