Luka Doncic was given a three-year extension a couple of days ago, keeping him with his new team through at least the 2027-28 NBA season.
Doncic is a superstar-caliber player, and the contract felt a little under what he’s worth despite still being worth a lot.
After one player signed a massive extension of his own on Monday, there was an interesting detail in the contract that people noticed after comparing it to Doncic’s recent deal.
What player got paid more than Doncic?
On Monday, Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox signed a new extension that will keep him with the team until the 2029-30 NBA season.

The contract is worth $229, with an AAV of $58 million.
On the surface, it appears to be a lot of money for a good player, but he has only made the All-Star team once in his career since being drafted in 2017.
Luka Doncic was in a similar position to Fox, as he was also traded away and acquired by his new team just before the 2025 trade deadline.
Doncic signed a $165 million deal that spans over three years.
His new AAV on that deal is $55 million.
That’s $3 million per year less than Fox’s new contract.

It doesn’t seem too crazy to think that Doncic should be paid more than Fox, as he’s far more projected to be closer to a face of the league type of player compared to Fox.
Other factors go into these deals than just maximizing money.
Fox is on a Spurs team that’s very young and has talented players who haven’t quite signed their career-changing contracts just yet.
Doncic may need to give the Lakers financial flexibility through a cheaper contract to ensure they can compete over the next few seasons.
Time will tell whether or not the contracts were worth it or not, but for now, it’s interesting to see a player like Fox getting dished out more money than a superstar like Luka Doncic.
