Red Sox leapfrog Yankees in standings for first time since March

The New York Yankees began the season 1-0.

Since that moment, they’ve had a better record than the Boston Red Sox.

That is, until Saturday.

Boston beat Houston to improve to 61-51, while the Yankees lost to the Marlins to fall to 60-51.

It’s the first time all year the Red Sox have been ahead of the Yankees in the standings.

Boston is now 4.0 games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East. The Yankees are 4.5 back.

They are the top-two teams in the wild card standings, with the Seattle Mariners 2.0 games back of Boston and the Texas Rangers 3.0 games back of Boston.

It’s quite the accomplishment for the Red Sox, who looked for a time like this might be a lost season.

In their last 10, the Red Sox are 7-3, while the Yankees are in a 4-6 stretch plagued by bad fundamentals.

These rivals won’t play again until a four-game set from Aug. 21-24. That’s in the Bronx.

Then from Sept. 12-14, they meet at Fenway Park. That’ll be their final three games against one another this season.

Given the current state of the American League, where there isn’t a true superpower, the Red Sox and Yankees should both just be aiming to get into the postseason wherever they can.

It’s one of those years where just being in the dance provides an opportunity to win the whole thing.

Still, though, the Red Sox have to be feeling a bit better than the Yankees right now. Boston is hot and rising, while New York is cold and falling.

Still lots of baseball to play, but finally, the Red Sox’s heads could hit the pillow ahead of their bitter rival.
