There’s nothing quite like a homecoming. The USWNT will do just that when it celebrates the retirement of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in October. The squad will face Portugal in Hartford, CT, the second of two meetings against the Europeans.
Naeher, a Connecticut native, is considered one of the greatest modern goalkeepers in the sport. She’s the only keeper in history to record a shutout in a World Cup final and Olympic gold match. Naeher is a two-time World Cup champion and has a gold and bronze Olympic medal.
After facing Portugal in Pennsylvania, the USWNT will finish out its two-match friendly in Hartford. The series is the first meeting since facing the team at the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup. That match was a 0-0 draw in the knockout round but Portugal’s first-ever draw with the U.S.
As the USWNT continues to evolve over the next two years, matches like these are of the upmost important.
“Portugal is a growing team that will be highly motivated for these matches, but as always, these three games are more opportunities to work on us,” said head coach Emma Hayes. “I’m very impressed with the progress we’ve made since the Olympics and I want to give a lot of credit to the players for embracing our culture and ideas, but our staff and the players know we still have much work to do before World Cup qualifying next year.”

The USWNT has three friendlies on the October 2025 schedule. They will face Portugal twice, celebrating the careers of Alex Morgan and Alyssa Naeher ahead of the matches. They will then head to Kansas City to play at the first dedicated women’s sports stadium.
