Chelsea plan free transfer exit on forgotten star to ease salary bill

Despite Ben Chilwell not being a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans at Chelsea, the club are having a tough time trying to get the player off their books, ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The England international is on huge wages at Stamford Bridge, making it difficult for Chelsea to find a potential suitor for him, with his salary reportedly in the region of £5.2m [$7m] per year.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace, but the Eagles showed no interest in signing him on a permanent deal.

Chelsea are starting to run out of options, and the club are considering letting the former Leicester City defender go for free, just to remove him from a growing wage bill.

The Blues are willing to terminate Chilwell’s contract at the club, which runs until 2027, as part of cost cutting measures imposed by the Blues hierarchy.

Despite the step being viewed as an extreme option, it shows just how desperate the Blues are to get rid of the 28-year-old, after five low-key seasons.

Chelsea could terminate Ben Chilwell’s contract

Frustrated with the lack of suitors for the player, Chelsea have seemingly arrived at a point where thy just want to cut ties, unless a last minute offer arrives.

Journalist Simon Phillips claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea the Blues will terminate the left-back’s contract if they cannot find a buyer for him.

The above will not be a cheap operation, though, as Chilwell is one of the highest earners at the club, and they could have to pay out at least one year of his deal.

Though some Premier League clubs have previously expressed an interest in signing Chilwell, none of them have made a formal approach for the player so far, and he could be a target for teams in the EFL Championship.

Chilwell has made just 70 Premier League appearances for Chelsea in five years with neither Mauricio Pochettino or Maresca counting on him as first-choice.
