Barcelona star set to leave with contract termination talks underway

Barcelona are preparing to part ways with midfielder Oriol Romeu this summer, with contract termination talks reportedly already underway.

The 33-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Girona, is no longer part of Hansi Flick’s plans, and both sides appear ready to go their separate ways.

Romeu returned to Camp Nou in 2023 after more than a decade away, but his second spell with the club never quite took off.

He played 39 games in all competitions last season, mostly under former boss Xavi, but didn’t manage to score and registered just one assist.

Now back from his loan, Romeu is reportedly set to leave for free, despite having a year left on his deal.

As per reports (via Mundo Deportivo), Barcelona are said to be negotiating an early contract termination to save the £3 million in wages he’s due over the next 12 months.

As per the same reports, the veteran midfielder has “accepted” the decision and is ready to move on. While Barcelona could have waited for a nominal transfer fee, it seems they’re choosing to cut ties cleanly — and quickly.

Players who could leave Barcelona this summer

Romeu’s expected exit may just be the start. Several other players could also be heading out the door in what’s shaping up to be a busy summer at Camp Nou.

Barcelona have already offloaded Ansu Fati (on loan to Monaco), Clement Lenglet, Pablo Torre, Pau Victor, and Alex Valle.

Now, eyes are on Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Fermin Lopez.

Frenkie de Jong’s future also remains uncertain. While a contract extension is being discussed, nothing is signed yet. And with young talents like Marc Casado and Marc Bernal rising fast, space in the squad is running out.
