Newcastle United have been looking to sign a goalkeeper in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The Magpies initially had their eyes set on Burnley’s James Trafford and also submitted an offer for the English shotstopper. However, Manchester City reportedly swooped in and matched Newcastle’s bid to acquire his signature.
Trafford, a Man City graduate, is expected to make his return to the Etihad for the upcoming season on a five-year deal, along with the option of a 12-month extension.
Trafford has been a long-term transfer target for Newcastle, who have now identified their next top prospect in the role of a goalkeeper.
Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale has attracted attention from Newcastle, who are working on a potential deal to bring him to St James’ Park, according to The Athletic.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein also reported that Southampton are open to considering several options, including a permanent sale for a good price and/or a loan move with a significant fee.
Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League in the 2024/25 season and will play in the EFL Championship in the upcoming one, are also open to retaining Ramsdale.
While no decisions from either club have been made as of yet, Ramsdale’s potential signing for Newcastle brings forth the possibility of the English goalkeeper’s reunion with head coach Eddie Howe.
Ramsdale was coached by Howe for three years during their respective tenures at Bournemouth between 2017 and 2020.
Ramsdale, whose current contract with Southampton is valid until the summer of 2029, maintained four clean sheets while conceding 68 goals in 32 matches.
