Paul Skenes is out of this world good. Anyone who follows Major League Baseball already knows that. But did anyone know just how good the 23-year-old right-hander actually was? And probably NO ONE knew how good Skenes is early in the game.
Sarah Langs posted an absurd stat about Paul Skenes that you will be glad you learned.
Most consecutive starts to begin a season without allowing a first-inning run, MLB history:⁰
1923 Bob Shawkey: 27
2025 Paul Skenes: 22 *active
2024 Reese Olson: 22
1992 Juan Guzman: 22
1942 Paul Derringer: 22h/t @EliasSports https://t.co/WX1RUf9Mln

Paul Skenes has not allowed a run in the first inning ALL season. That’s 22 straight stats. That’s the second most in all of Major League Baseball history. He is five away from tying the record, and he tied…. Reese Olson? Who knew? Olson did it last season.
Skenes is now 6-8 on the season, after going six innings, allowing three hits, and not a single run. He struck out nine batters, as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-0.

The National League All-Star starter now has an insane earned run average of 1.83 on the season. He has not given up a run since July 11, and over five starts in the month of July, he allowed just two earned runs.
Unfortunately his Pirates are in last place in the National League Central. Pittsburgh is 43-62 on the season. The loss for Arizona dropped them to 51-54 on the season.
Skenes will likely get his next chance over the weekend, as the Pirates are at the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series, following their trip to San Francisco.
