Saints QB Tyler Shough impresses behind the scenes as Kellen Moore weighs rookie rotation

Tyler Shough is making a strong impression in the New Orleans Saints’ offseason activities, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Shough, a rookie quarterback drafted by the Saints after thorough scouting, has shown strong mental attributes and work ethic behind the scenes.

It’s the NFL’s “Back Together Weekend,” and on Sunday, the Saints hosted their fourth open practice.

Rapoport highlighted that Shough is “kind of made of the right stuff,” noting coaches appreciate his leadership qualities, dedication and football intelligence.

Shough reportedly arrives early, stays late and sets an example for teammates. While the mental aspect of his game is praised, Rapoport cautioned that how Shough will perform in actual games remains uncertain, as rookie quarterbacks often face a steep learning curve.

The Saints have not set a timeline for deciding their starting quarterback. Instead, the team is rotating its quarterbacks in practice, giving each player opportunities to compete.

Rapoport explained that the starting role will likely be determined gradually based on performance during practice and preseason games, with coaches waiting to see who emerges as the right fit.

The Saints’ quarterback competition features a three-man race with Shough, second-year QB Spencer Rattler and veteran Jake Haener all vying for the starting role.

On Saturday, Saints head coach Kellen Moore shared his thoughts on the QB competition, saying the team will “let the process take as long as it needs.”

The quarterback decision remains open, but Shough’s early work has generated optimism among coaches and fans.
