Arsenal claimed a second victory in their preseason spell in Singapore as they defeated Premier League rivals Newcastle United 3-2.
The Gunners, watched by new signing Viktor Gyokeres, produced another solid display to build on their 1-0 win over AC Milan on Wednesday. For the Magpies, this was a decent performance amid the distraction of Alexander Isak’s possible exit and the difficult nature of their transfer window to date.
Eddie Howe’s side took the lead early on through a mishit finish from Anthony Elanga, but Arsenal largely controlled the game at Singapore’s National Stadium. They scored twice in two minutes to take a 2-1 lead into halftime, Mikel Merino finishing precisely from Kai Havertz’s layoff before Alex Murphy blasted the ball into his own net from a Havertz cross.
Both sides made substantial changes during the second half, and it was Newcastle substitute Jacob Murphy who levelled the scores with a fine left-foot strike from outside the box that arrowed its way into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard secured the win in the closing stages from the penalty spot after exciting young talent Max Dowman had been bundled over by Joelinton following a strong run into the box.

Arteta and his players will now prepare for a north London derby against Tottenham in Hong Kong on July 31. Newcastle are next in action a day earlier in Suwon, South Korea, where they will face a K. League All-Star XI.

Arsenal vs. Newcastle United lineups, team news
Martin Zubimendi gets his first start for the Gunners in midfield, with Mikel Merino joining him in a central trio along with Ethan Nwaneri.
Noni Madueke, signed from Chelsea last week, will not feature yet as he is on a short break following the Blues’ FIFA Club World Cup campaign. Viktor Gyokeres needs time to link up with the club and get to training before he can appear in a match.
Arsenal’s only injury worry at this point in preseason is the continued recovery of forward Gabriel Jesus from his ACL tear last winter. Jesus is expected to be ready for action soon but will be brought back slowly given his history of knee injuries.
Arsenal lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — White, Saliba, Calafiori, Lewis-Skelly — Merino, Zubimendi, Nwaneri — Saka, Havertz, Martinelli
Arsenal subs:Â Odegaard, Martinelli, Kepa, Kiwior, Norgaard, Zinchenko, Nelson, Lokonga, Setford, Copley, Rice, Kabia, Nichols, Rojas, Dowman, Harriman-Annous, Salmon
With reports that Alexander Isak is trying to force his way out of Newcastle, it’s unlikely that the striker will play in preseason matches until the situation is resolved, even if he recovers from an apparent thigh issue.
Lewis Hall is the only other Newcastle player struggling with an injury, but his ankle issue isn’t thought to be serious.
New winger Anthony Elanga should be ready to play significant minutes moving forward after coming off the bench against Celtic.
