The Jets are looking to re-establish an identity in 2025 under the new regime of coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey, but a major part of it might already be at risk of missing time.
QB Justin Fields suffered an apparent lower-leg injury during the early portion of Thursday’s practice, just days into training camp with his new team.
The Jets signed Fields to a two-year contract in March, giving the former No. 10 pick one more opportunity to prove he can be a long-term starter in the NFL after starting six games with the Steelers in 2024. A dynamic athlete who hasn’t been able to put it all together as a passer, Fields is looking to lead New York to more success after a five-win season with Aaron Rodgers under center in 2024.
Here are the latest updates on Fields’ injury and his status going forward.

Justin Fields injury update
UPDATE: The Jets announced Fields is day-to-day with a dislocated toe and avoided serious injury. On Friday, Fields dressed for practice and ran out with the team, as he will attempt to participate in parts of practice, according to Ian Rapoport.

Fields went down with an apparent lower-leg injury on his first throw of Thursday’s practice and was taken back to the Jets’ facility on a cart.

Fields stood up after the play, sat back down, then stood up again before heavily limping off the field, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes. Once he reached the trainers’ table, Fields’ shoe was taken off as his lower leg was examined.
A team doctor was seen speaking to Mougey after Fields was carted away.
The #Jets were running through team drills. Starters came back on. They ran one play (Fields incompletion). He stood up, sat down, then stood up before. He limped off the field VERY gingerly.
He’s currently on table. Trainers removed his shoe and are working on him. He’s on… https://t.co/tLU1bN6WZ8

Glenn provided some good news, all things considered, telling reporters after practice that Fields suffered a toe injury. While Glenn said he didn’t know the severity of the injury, he said he believed another player stepped on Fields’ toe.
Aaron Glenn on Justin Fields: He has a toe injury on right side of foot.
He doesn’t know severity.

Fields is dealing with a dislocated toe, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. While the severity is unclear, Fields did not suffer a fracture, and the injury was not to his big toe.

Tyrod Taylor is next up on the Jets’ depth chart, though there is no confirmation that Fields is dealing with a serious injury; it’s worth noting the use of the cart during training camp is not often the same as the use of a cart during the regular season, as many training camp fields are located a longer distance away from the team facility.
Jets QB depth chart
QB | Player |
1 | Justin Fields |
2 | Tyrod Taylor |
3 | Adrian Martinez |
4 | Brady Cook |
The Jets have a veteran with starting experience as their No. 2 quarterback in Tyrod Taylor, but the team made it clear before the start of training camp that there is no competition and Fields was in line to start. Taylor spent the 2024 season as Rodgers’ backup but did not start a game.
No one else on the Jets’ roster has starting experience under center. Former Nebraska and Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez served as New York’s emergency quarterback in 2024 and is competing for that role again with undrafted rookie Brady Cook, who started multiple years at Missouri.
