Chelsea set to complete eighth summer signing after talks reach ‘advanced’ stage

Chelsea’s transfer train keeps rolling — and Xavi Simons might be the next to board.

The Blues are reportedly closing in on their eighth signing of the summer, with talks progressing well between the club and RB Leipzig for Dutch attacker Xavi Simons.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the two sides are in “advanced” negotiations, and the player is eager to make the move.

At just 22, Simons is already turning heads across Europe. After a standout season with Leipzig, he looks ready for the Premier League stage.

Chelsea, meanwhile, continue to reshape their squad under manager Enzo Maresca. Simons appears to be the latest piece of the puzzle.

This summer has already seen a flurry of new faces at Stamford Bridge — Kendry Paez, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, Estevao, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens. Now, Simons looks next in line.

Where can Xavi Simons play at Chelsea?

Here’s where things get interesting.

Simons played most of last season — around 75% — on the left wing. But he’s more than just a wide man.

He’s also comfortable in central roles, especially as a No. 10, where he loves to operate in tight spaces and create chances.

Speaking back in 2023, Simons admitted: “I prefer playing as a No. 10, but I’ll play wherever the team needs me.”

Chelsea already have Cole Palmer pulling strings in the middle. But Simons adds a new dimension — someone who can drift inside, stretch the defense, or combine in tight pockets.

It’s the kind of headache any manager would welcome.

Stat fans, here’s one for you: Simons averaged 70.9 touches per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga last season — more than Palmer’s 56.5 in the Premier League (via Opta Analyst).

That’s a lot of ball-time for a player who could soon be lighting up the Bridge.
