Viktor Gyokeres medical date confirmed as new Arsenal striker picks shirt number

Viktor Gyokeres is set to undergo a two-part medical ahead of his move to Arsenal, with the Sweden international expected to wear the number 14 shirt at his new club.

The Gunners had hoped to complete the move in time for their pre-season tour of Asia but delays over the final paperwork have slightly pushed back the timeline.

Sporting finally accepted Arsenal’s latest offer for €63.5 million plus €10 million in add-ons on Thursday, with the striker set to sign a five-year contract with the club until 2030.

Gyokeres, 27, was identified as Arsenal’s top striker target after a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko stalled.

He comes off the back of a sensational season in Portugal, where he scored 54 goals in 52 games across all competitions.

Formerly of Brighton and Coventry City, Gyokeres has flourished since his £20 million switch to Sporting in 2023.

His form has attracted widespread interest, but Arsenal moved quickly once it became clear he was open to a return to English football.

Mikel Arteta has made no secret of his desire to bring in a prolific No.9, with last season’s title challenge ultimately falling short.

The Gunners scored 17 fewer goals than Liverpool and finished 10 points off the pace. Last week, Arsenal added further firepower with the signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea, and the arrival of Gyokeres is seen as another major statement of intent.

Gyokeres who has 15 goals in 26 caps for his country, is expected to wear the No.14 shirt at Arsenal, a number famously worn by Thierry Henry.

He will undergo the first part of his medical on Friday, before completing the second part on Saturday and signing for the club.
