Mason Mount breaks silence on being called ‘worst in history’ by Ruben Amorim

Manchester United ranked 15th in the Premier League in the 2024/25 season, which marked to be the lowest ever in the club’s history.

The Red Devils also missed out on their only chance at lifting a trophy last campaign with their defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

With these results, Man United will be left without any European football in the upcoming season for the first time since 2013–14.

After taking charge as Man United’s head coach in November last year following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim referred to his squad as ‘the worst team in the history’ of the club in a press conference in January.

“I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now. We are the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines,” as per ESPN.

Now, ahead of the upcoming campaign, one of the Man United squad, Mason Mount, has opened up about his feelings towards the Portuguese manager’s comments.

What did Manchester United’s Mason Mount say?

While speaking to The Athletic, Mount candidly admitted that Amorim’s comments are not what a player wants, while mentioning it is ‘difficult’ for a manager to take over a team halfway through the season.

“As a player, you never want that. I can just speak for myself personally, going away in the summer, you’re always looking at what you can do better, how you can be better for your teammates and perform as a group, how we can all perform better,” as per GOAL.

“Last season, it wasn’t good enough. We know that, but we’re kicking on now. We’re ready to put that right. And from the first game of the season, it starts off pretty good (at home to Arsenal). A top first game, so we’ll be ready for that when that comes around now.”

“I think it’s always difficult, a manager coming in halfway through a season. There were so many games, and we didn’t have a pre-season to work on things and look at the shape. We obviously changed shape halfway through a season.”

“It’s difficult to adapt sometimes to those situations, and I think that could have played a part in that. With the games, we didn’t have loads of training time. We play a game and the next day is a recovery day. And then you build up to the next game.”

Mount then stated that the Red Devils are ‘wiping the slate clean’ with the new season approaching and added,

“We haven’t done loads of analysis of last season. We looked at a few areas that we can improve on, but this is a new season. It’s like wiping the slate clean. Coming into this season with a different kind of attitude and a feeling about it and we’re ready to go.”

After their four upcoming pre-season friendly games, Man United are set to kick off the 2025/26 campaign with their opening Premier League match against Arsenal on August 17 at Old Trafford.
