It seems that what followed the trade between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New York Knicks that sent Karl Anthony-Towns hasn’t exactly impressed everybody since the deal was made nearly a year ago.
Bleacher Report writer Grant Hughes gave the trade a grade of “C-,” after the 2024-25 NBA season came and went.
“Towns and Brunson, together, didn’t add up to more than the sum of their parts. New York was better with one or the other playing solo in the postseason than it was with both sharing the floor,” Hughes wrote. “Against dialed-in opponents, the modest in-season synergy between the Knicks’ top two offensive players nearly disappeared while the defense got even worse. Teams spammed pick-and-roll sets those two couldn’t cover, exposing a concerning postseason frailty.”
That postseason frailty resulted in the Knicks coming up short in the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to the Indiana Pacers in six games after putting up an improving 51-31 regular season record.
Perhaps the connection between Towns and Brunson just needs another season to strengthen before the Knicks bring a championship back to Madison Square Garden.
